Perhaps most disturbing are stories of workers in the global south—particularly Kenya and Colombia—who perform dangerous, traumatizing tasks for these corporations, often for meager pay. In Kenya, workers moderate violent or sexual content, risking PTSD and personal trauma. A worker described how hours of viewing child abuse content led to personality changes, broken relationships, and even hospitalizations.
In Latin America, workers engaged in labeling data—images, text—face similar exploitation, working under intense time pressure and job precarity, often in crisis circumstances that worsen their health and well-being. They are essential cogs in a multi-trillion-dollar industry but remain vastly underpaid and unprotected.
