Plato himself, primarily a philosopher rather than a historian, used Atlantis as an allegory for philosophical ideas about hubris and divine punishment. Nonetheless, many speculate that Atlantis symbolized a real, technologically advanced society that met its downfall, possibly linked to cataclysms such as the Biblical Flood.
