Currently, about 5 million people are employed in India’s tech sector, which includes software development, customer support, cybersecurity, and more. The country captures roughly 59% of the US’s annual outbound IT jobs, which total approximately 300,000 positions.
Major corporations like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta have substantial engineering and support teams based in India. Outsourcing to India is driven primarily by cost savings, as Indian labor can be 40-70% cheaper than American wages. This cost advantage allows companies to scale operations and maintain competitiveness, but it also raises concerns about wage suppression and job displacement in the US.
