Contrary to initial beliefs that the heat shield tiles remained intact, images captured after the descent displayed a significant orange or rust-colored layer on parts of the spacecraft—specifically where tiles had been intentionally removed for testing purposes. These areas revealed bare stainless steel, with visible signs of erosion and plasma ablation, indicating intense heat exposure and localized damage. Notably, certain regions exhibited signs of scouring from plasma, with oxides of nickel or chromium forming a characteristic greenish hue, further evidence of the thermal stress endured.
