Martin's focus has shifted not only onto the Winds of Winter but also onto other creative outlets. He has written Fire and Blood (a history of the Targaryen dynasty), produced TV shows such as Dark Winds, and even began work on a coffee table book titled The Rise of the Dragon. These diversions have caused further delays, as Martin admits to putting Winds of Winter aside repeatedly to work on related projects.
By mid-2024, he was openly questioning if he would ever finish the book, describing it as a "curse" of his life. Despite occasional commitments to finish Winds of Winter, he remains bogged down by other obligations, including television adaptations and personal challenges.
