Elon noted that the longer the interval between interventions, the harder it becomes to identify incremental improvements in the system's intelligence. This is because with fewer data points, it becomes difficult to compare different versions of the software and assess which one performs better. To accelerate development, Tesla adopts a method called shadow mode, where FSD runs passively on all Tesla vehicles on the road—whether or not FSD is activated—allowing Tesla to gather millions or billions of miles of data without risking safety or requiring intervention.
