In shadow mode, Tesla's vehicles collect real-world data by observing how the cars would behave in various scenarios without actually acting on their decisions. This provides an immense amount of useful information to improve the neural networks behind FSD. Tesla's recent models are already running in shadow mode, giving the company high confidence that version 13 (v13) of its software will significantly improve miles between interventions—by approximately six times compared to previous versions.
