Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, has previously emphasized that even once the FSD software becomes highly refined—surpassing the skill level of the average human driver—there will still be a considerable delay before regulators around the world approve its widespread use. Regulatory approval is a complex process, often taking years of testing, validation, and negotiation.
Based on current estimates, Elon Musk predicts that gaining worldwide regulatory approval for fully autonomous FSD vehicles will require around 6 billion miles driven on the software. Since Tesla has only just reached 1 billion miles, this places the company roughly one-sixth of the way toward achieving the necessary data volume for regulatory approval and commercial deployment.
