The incident began when a pickup truck was being towed backwards at an angle instead of in a straight line behind the tow truck. The position of the pickup—partially in a turn lane and at an odd angle—created a confusing scenario for the AV sensors. Both self-driving vehicles misinterpreted the situation based on their camera data, predicting the movement of the tow truck inaccurately.
As a result, the first Weimo vehicle collided with the pickup truck. Despite the crash, the tow truck continued on its route. Just a few minutes later, a second autonomous vehicle from the same company encountered the scene and also hit the tow truck. Fortunately, there were no passengers inside either of the autonomous vehicles, minimizing potential injuries.
