A major concern centers around the blades themselves. Made of fiberglass and other non-recyclable materials, these blades pose disposal problems once they reach the end of their lifespan, typically around 15 years. Afterward, they often get cut down and left in the water or landfills, containing toxins that could leach into the environment.
Nantucket and other coastal areas have already seen turbines breaking apart, with shattered blades remaining hazardous and impossible to recycle safely. These blades could become marine debris or pose risks to beachgoers if they break free from rigging or structures.
