Previously, Tesla adopted a more closed approach with regard to its autonomous platform, but recent signals indicate a more open stance—tearing down the 'walled garden' of exclusivity. By encouraging collaborations with legacy automakers, Tesla seeks to accelerate deployment and adoption of autonomous tech through licensing, which could drastically expand its reach and revenue streams.
This openness also signals a recognition of increasing competition within the EV and autonomous space. While other companies like Google’s Waymo, GM’s Crews, and various startups are active, Tesla’s significant capital reserves, extensive data collection, and vehicle fleet with advanced sensor arrays give it a substantial competitive advantage.
