Another critical concern raised by opposition is the deteriorating state of Victoria’s firefighting resources. According to reports, 132 fire trucks are approaching or exceeding their 15-year replacement cycle, yet government funding remains insufficient to upgrade or replace these vital assets. Southwick contrasted this neglect with the government’s spending of over $380 million on initiatives like establishing a treaty—highlighting a misallocation of priorities.
“When trucks are not even fit for purpose, it’s a safety risk,” Southwick warned. With the fire season imminent, the lack of appropriate equipment raises serious concerns about emergency preparedness for both firefighters and the general public.
