Part 5/13:
A significant sticking point remains Hamas’s unwillingness to disarm or relinquish control over Gaza’s security. Senior Hamas official Muhammad Nazal stated that the group intends to maintain authority and cannot commit to disarmament, citing ambiguities about what disarmament entails and to whom the weapons would be handed over. This stance directly conflicts with the terms of the Trump-brokered framework, which calls for Hamas to fully disarm and transfer governance to an international oversight body.
Nazal also hinted at the possibility of a longer-term truce, suggesting Hamas might accept a pause of three to five years to rebuild Gaza — but only if Palestinians are granted hopes for statehood and sovereignty. This indicates Hamas’s focus on political gains rather than disarmament.
