What followed was a swift escalation: protests in Kathmandu and other cities turned violent as security forces used water cannons, tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition. Mob violence expanded to torch government buildings, including the parliament and Supreme Court, and even the residences of political leaders. The chaos reached a tragic crescendo when a mob set fire to the former Prime Minister’s house, trapping and killing his wife. The violence claimed at least 19 lives, with hundreds wounded, and led to the shutdown of flights, military control at airports, and imposed curfews.
