Recent union strikes by SAG-AFTRA, the Directors Guild, and the Writers Guild have further complicated the landscape. While these strikes have resulted in higher pay and protections for workers, they also increase production costs locally. To offset these costs, studios are moving more production overseas, where labor costs are lower and regulations more relaxed.
This trend poses a threat to American jobs, especially among below-the-line workers—set builders, costume designers, grips, and technicians—many of whom now face job losses as productions relocate globally.
