Coinciding with this buoyant season are significant regulatory changes affecting seafood labeling across Australia. Starting this month, new laws require all seafood served in cafes, pubs, clubs, and restaurants to be labeled clearly as either "Australian" or "imported."
This labeling mandate aims to promote transparency and inform consumers about the origin of their seafood. By mid-2024, establishments will need to specify whether the seafood they serve has been imported or locally sourced, whether cooked or raw. This marks a notable shift in the industry, where previously, such labeling was not mandatory.
A spokesperson explained, "Business owners have a year to implement these changes, with enforcement beginning from July 1, 2026."
