Preliminary reports suggest that in the crucial moments after takeoff, both fuel control switches—located between the pilots' seats—were switched off in rapid succession, cutting off fuel to the engines. The switches were then promptly turned back on ten seconds later, but by then, it was too late to regain full thrust. The exact sequence — and whether the switches were engaged intentionally or accidentally — remains an open question.
