Historically, aid efforts by the UN and other organizations involved trucks entering Gaza with supplies, but a lack of oversight meant that some aid was diverted or stolen, with armed groups sometimes intervening. The creation of GHF aimed to resolve these issues by setting up designated, secure distribution points in collaboration with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). These distribution sites, managed by private security contractors—many former US service members—operate in areas outside Hamas’s reach. Aid trucks would bring supplies to these zones, where civilians could collect aid safely, thereby reducing Hamas’s capacity to manipulate or profit from aid delivery.
