Despite the optimism, hurdles persist. Many armed groups operate in eastern Congo, rooted in deep-seated resentments linked to the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Rwanda’s support for some rebel factions, explicitly or otherwise, complicates negotiations. Furthermore, the M23 rebels were not included in the initial peace deal, and parallel talks led by U.N. mediators continue to work toward disarmament and reintegration.
While this treaty offers hope, the path to lasting peace remains fraught with political, ethnic, and economic challenges. Nonetheless, the agreement marks a crucial step toward stabilizing one of the world’s most volatile regions.
