On June 4th, headlines centered around a significant challenge to Hamas’s longstanding dominance in the Gaza Strip. An armed militia, headed by Yaser Abu Shabbab, has begun asserting control over parts of Gaza, especially in East Rafa, signaling a possible shift in local power dynamics.

This militia, calling itself Al Kuwat Elshabaya or “The Popular Forces,” recently declared victory in East Rafa, claiming the area had been “cleansed” and was now under their control. They assured residents of providing shelter and food, presenting themselves as protectors amid the ongoing chaos.
