The recent escalation tests the already fragile ceasefire that ended a two-month full-scale war last year. The ceasefire stipulated Hezbollah's withdrawal of fighters and weapons north of the Latan River—roughly 18 miles from the Israeli border—and mandated increased Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping deployments in southern Lebanon.
However, Hezbollah has repeatedly violated the ceasefire, maintaining a significant presence in the region. The Lebanese armed forces have struggled to reassert control, and Israel continues to control five strategic positions in southern Lebanon, citing Hezbollah’s ongoing activities and the Lebanese army's insufficient efforts to contain the group.
