Part 8/13:
One of the most ambitious features is orbital refueling, allowing the HLS to extend its range and payload capacity. However, this approach entails tackling significant engineering hurdles, notably cryogenic fuel transfer between massive spacecraft in orbit—a challenge that has never before been achieved at this scale.
Recent evidence indicates that SpaceX is actively working toward operationalizing this capability. Engineers at Starbase have been seen modifying Starship 39, the first V3 iteration, with new ports not just for crew and cargo but explicitly for orbital refilling. Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX intends to conduct multiple orbital refilling tests in 2024 and 2025, with a focus on docking operations using Starship V3.
