The estate’s grounds exemplified Platt’s landscape artistry. Situated on a steep hillside, the property boasted terraced gardens that cascaded down towards rolling fields. These terraces were carefully designed with flowerbeds, shrubs, and specimen trees—blending native New England flora with imported species. Spring was a spectacle of blooming tulips and other vibrant blossoms.
A highlight of the gardens was a classical pergola with tall columns, strategically placed on a terrace to provide panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Unlike typical garden structures nestled among trees, Maxwell’s pergola was intentionally positioned to overlook distant vistas, creating an open, majestic focal point.
