His career soon intertwined with politics, and by the late 1850s, Morton served in Nebraska Territory’s legislative body. President James Buchanan appointed him Secretary of the Nebraska Territory in 1858, and he even acted as the territory’s governor until 1861. Although Morton’s pro-slavery stance eventually made it difficult for him to attain higher public office as Nebraska transitioned to statehood, his impact on the region was indelible.
