Morton’s agriculture endeavors expanded rapidly. His efforts included raising livestock, establishing orchards, and cultivating a landscape that was increasingly verdant. By 1857, Morton had begun advocating for tree planting across the territory, launching a public movement through his newspaper. His initiative culminated in the first Arbor Day celebration in April 1872, during which over a million trees were planted in Nebraska. Morton’s leadership was instrumental in transforming Nebraska from a treeless prairie into a lush environment.
