Fortunately, community efforts and preservationists recognized its historical significance. In 1972, Beaulieu was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the expansion of a local college—the DeAnza Institute—the mansion was carefully relocated twice—each move a remarkable technical feat weighing up to 300 tons.
The first move was to clear the space for a performing arts center, and the second was to accommodate a parking lot expansion. Both shifts were executed with precision, allowing the estate to survive and eventually be restored. By 1982, after extensive renovation, the mansion was restored to its former glory.
