Part 4/14:

The idea for Omstead originated around 1910, when Aldred, along with close friends—a Boston lawyer named William D. Gethree and other magnates—ambitious enough to nearly purchase an entire village on Long Island’s north shore. They acquired approximately 400 acres, demolishing around 60 houses to make way for their exclusive enclave. Aldred jested that he and Gethree "destroyed the village just to get the view," a remark that nonetheless became part of local lore, symbolizing the ruthless pursuit of grandeur characteristic of the era.
