Part 9/14:
The landscape was equally impressive. Aldred commissioned the notable landscape architecture firm, the Omsted Brothers—descendants of the designer of Central Park—to craft over 112 acres of gardens, formal courtyards, and natural woodland. The grounds included a central formal garden, adorned with a fountain, rose gardens, pathways lined with lilacs, and an Elizabethan-style knot garden decorated with statues personally overseen by Aldred’s wife. Imported Lebanese cedars and meticulously trimmed hedges turned the estate into an idyll reminiscent of British country estates.
