The Great Depression, beginning with the 1929 stock market crash, severely impacted Aldred’s fortunes. His international investments waned, especially with the outbreak of World War II, which disrupted overseas utility ventures in Italy and elsewhere. Domestically, new antitrust laws and federal regulations cracked down on monopoly-style control of utilities, forcing the breakup of Aldred’s extensive holdings.
