Part 8/14:
A notable room was the library, a two-story sanctuary with warm walnut paneling, holding approximately 5,000 books. Charles Baldwin, an avid reader, often retreated here late at night, seeking solace in literature. Hidden doors within the woodwork allowed secret access for a bit of intrigue. A gilded candelabra-based chandelier illuminated this scholarly haven.
Other primary spaces included a charming ladies’ salon, decorated with plaster arabesques and painted scenes from La Fontaine’s fables, and a gentlemen’s billiards room, featuring imported Scottish furniture, a fireplace, and a clandestine smoking lounge echoing a private club.
