The Elms and The John Jacob Astor House—once symbols of wealth—were demolished or repurposed. The Astro House, once a French Rococo fairy tale, was destroyed by fire in 1929, with only photographs remaining. Similarly, Villa Mirós on Palm Beach was broken into apartments after the 1950s. The Corkeran House—a grand Italianate mansion—was demolished in 1922 to make way for modernity, its walls and artifacts dispersed.
