Born in 1852 into a fortunate family, Morton Plant was the son of Henry Bradley Plant, a self-made railroad and steamship tycoon who expanded transportation across the southern United States. From a young age, Morton was groomed for business; he attended a military academy in New Haven and began working for his father’s South’s fast freight company in his teens. By 1884, he had ascended to vice president of the family’s railway and steamship enterprises, overseeing major mergers like that with the Atlantic Coast Line Railway.
