However, in 1971, recognizing its historical importance and potential as a state asset, descendants of Hobile donated the mansion to the state of Iowa. This long-anticipated gift marked the beginning of preservation efforts to restore the house and ensure its legacy endured.
Today, Terrace Hill stands as both a historic residence and a symbol of Iowa’s rich industrial and social history. It functions as the official residence of the Governor of Iowa, welcoming visitors and event attendees alike, while serving as a reminder of the extraordinary rise and tragic fall of Benjamin Allen—the orphan who built an empire and paid a heavy price for his ambitions.
