The construction of their estate began in the late 1890s, with talented architects and landscape designers brought on board to realize their ambitious vision. The original main house was a modest two-and-a-half-story wooden summer residence, built between 1894 and 1896, designed by Herbert Brown of the Little, Brown & Moore firm. Its colonial revival style featured white exteriors and a formal entrance, serving as a stylish yet relatively simple summer home.
