Alfred’s early years were steeped in industrial heritage; his grandfather founded the company EI du Pont de Nemours in 1802, a legacy that Alfred was eager to uphold and expand. A brilliant and mechanically gifted young man, Alfred briefly attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before leaving after two years to join the family mills, quickly establishing himself as a master in explosives, holding over 200 patents related to ammunition and machinery.
