The fate of the mansion took a significant turn in 1972 when it was acquired by the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). To facilitate its expansion, NYIT purchased the property from the Gist family, effectively saving it from demolition—a fate that befell many Gold Coast mansions during this period. Renamed De Seversky Mansion in honor of Alexander P. de Seversky, a Russian-American aviator and a pivotal NYIT trustee, the estate was repurposed for educational and institutional use.
