Knight's idyllic life at Clarendon Court was shattered in 1910 when his wife, Clare, passed away. The loss marked a turning point, and Knight shifted away from the mansion to a more modest residence nearby in Middle-town called Stonebrook, designed by Trumbauer as well.

Later, Knight remarried and in the early 1920s funded the construction of an even larger estate—an Art Nouveau palace called Corolla Island, later famous as the Weyhill Club. Yet Clarendon Court remained a symbol of his earlier ambitions.
