Part 7/9:
The mansion's story took a darker turn during the turbulent mid-20th century. In 1970, it was acquired by Socrates "Sunny" von Bülow, an American heiress with a fortune of around $75 million, and her husband, Claus von Bülow, a member of Danish aristocracy. Their life together was glittering, but tragedy struck during the Christmas season of 1979.
On December 26, Sunny was found unresponsive after a family gathering. Hospitalized, she was diagnosed with insulin poisoning—a condition manageable with medical care. She regained consciousness but remained cautious in her health. However, a year later, on December 21, 1980, she fell into an irreversible coma during another holiday gathering, remaining in a persistent vegetative state for nearly three decades until her death in 2008.
