Part 8/11:
In the late 1890s, Barber also developed Ardsley Park—a 400-acre estate along the Hudson River, complete with a golf course and lush grounds, symbolizing his desire for grandeur and social standing.
Yacht and Extravagance
His wealth was further exemplified by a 269-foot luxurious steam yacht named Lorena, named after his daughter. With a crew of 44, it was a symbol of his opulence, allowing him to sail in style and entertain in exclusivity.
The Sunset of an Empire
Despite his successes, Barber’s dominance in asphalt faced increasing challenges. Rival companies and regulatory pressures led to the downfall of the Asphalt Trust, which collapsed by 1901. Recognizing the impending decline, Barber prudently retired from active management before the trust’s collapse.
