However, in December 1928, tragedy struck. Fred Thompson was working in the stables at Enchanted Hill when he stepped on a rusty nail. An infection of tetanus (lockjaw) developed, and initial misdiagnosis led to delayed treatment. Despite medical efforts, Thompson’s condition worsened rapidly. On Christmas Day, 1928, he passed away at age 38, shocking Hollywood and fans alike.
