Part 7/13:
Constructed in 1893, Levi Ziegler Litter’s mansion was among the tallest and most opulent residences in the city. Designed by T.P. Chandler, Jr., it integrated classical elements with bold proportions, measuring 96 feet deep and 75 feet wide with 55 rooms decorated with luxurious materials. Litter’s wife and their daughter, who married British Lord Kears Kersay, hosted grand social functions, symbolizing Washington’s social aspirations. The mansion served as a social hub until the 1930s when rising maintenance costs, the war, and changing societal tastes led to its decline.
