The estate was inherited by the Punahou School, Hawaii’s most prestigious private school. Initially used to house faculty members, the mansion's vastness and maintenance costs made it unsuitable for long-term institutional use. By the late 1960s, discussions of selling it to developers intensified, and plans to demolish it in favor of dense housing are evident in records from that period.
