What started as a basic cabin swiftly grew into one of Alabama’s most striking homes. Over the years from 1843 to 1861, Wetfield expanded Marlment into a grand mansion named Jianzo Wood, meticulously adding rooms, wings, and stylistic features inspired by classical Greek architecture. The goal was grandeur rooted in the principles of Greek antiquity, with a daring amalgamation of the three primary Greek orders—Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian—a rarity among American homes of that time.
