Using a turret room as his sanctuary, he began penning articles and poetry under his new pseudonym, Francis Gerrison. His writings delved into spiritualism, mysticism, and childhood memories of Illinois during Lincoln’s era. Recognized as a talented author, Shepard aimed to elevate his standing as a thinker and mystical scholar.
In 1888, seeking to expand his influence, Shepard and Thorner traveled to Paris, borrowing money against Villa Montezuma to fund his literary debut. His first collection of spiritual essays was published there, marking his transformation from a musical prodigy to a serious literary figure.
