In St. Augustine, the oldest city in America, the Gonzales Alvarez House dates to around 1726. Made from coquina stone, a shell limestone, it has endured wars, hurricanes, and various owners through the centuries. Now a museum, it offers a rare window into Florida’s colonial era and is still proudly listed as the oldest surviving home in the Sunshine State.

Georgia: Horton House

An iconic ruin on Jekyll Island, built in 1743, the Horton House was the home of early British settler William Horton. Constructed from oyster shells, mortar, and coral, albeit now partially collapsed, its walls still overlook the marsh, echoing the mood of 18th-century Georgia settlement.
