Her health gradually declined, and she passed away in 1931 at the age of 76. Her mansion, symbolic of her life and status, endured through the decades but began to fade from the social scene as time moved on.


Transition and Preservation

During World War II, many large homes in Washington were repurposed for the war effort. In the early 1940s, parts of the mansion’s stables and carriage houses were used by the Women Volunteers’ service to support soldiers.

In January 1950, the mansion was purchased by the prestigious Cosmos Club, a private social and intellectual organization. After renovation and modernization—including adding a new wing in the early 1960s—the mansion remained the club’s headquarters, preserving its historic character while adapting to contemporary uses.
