By 1909, he purchased a sprawling 313-acre peninsula called Great Hill in Marion, Massachusetts, a place known for its summer visitors escaping the city’s heat. The estate was once home to the Marion House Hotel, a Victorian-era resort, but Stone demolished the hotel and cleared the land to create a private sanctuary.
