The latest outage was triggered by a failure at Cuba’s largest power plant in the western part of the island, plunging the capital, Havana, into near-total darkness early in the morning.
This blackout stems from longstanding issues: outdated, oil-fired power stations that date back decades and cannot keep pace with the country's increasing energy needs. Since October, the same plant has experienced multiple failures, exacerbated by declining fuel supplies due to reduced imports from Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico.
