By the early 20th century, Smith’s success enabled him to craft a residence worthy of his status. In 1912, he purchased a sprawling 74-acre plot on the picturesque peninsula of Centerville in Oyster Bay, Long Island—a landscape dotted with grand estates. Partnering with the prominent architects Hoppin & Quimby, Smith commissioned the construction of what would become one of the most impressive mansions on Long Island.
