By the early 1850s, Edmond Marmillion was deeply invested in creating a grand residence. Following the devastating loss of his wife, Annette, to tuberculosis, and the repeated illnesses of his children—six of whom tragically died young—Marmillion was motivated to leave a lasting legacy. In approximately 1853, he embarked on building what would become one of the most spectacular homes in Louisiana, sparing no expense.
